Evaluation & Management Of OBS: Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

There are bunch of symptoms for OBS but as snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness is also experienced by almost all patients. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles that support the soft tissues in your throat, such as your tongue and soft palate, temporarily relax. When these muscles relax, your airway is narrowed or closed, and breathing is momentarily cut off.

What is Excessive Daytime Sleepiness?

EDS is not an illness rather a symptom of sleep disorder, it is a serious symptom that can have many different causes. If you feel excessively sleepy, you and your doctor should investigate it further. The common causes are poor sleep habits, such as the reduced opportunity for sleep or irregular sleep schedule, a sleep disorder like obstructive sleep apnea, side effects from certain medications, and other underlying medical conditions.

Normally after diagnosis your doctor will just make a plan of good sleeping habits and a healthy lifestyle to correct EDS. For others, further medical tests or sleep studies may be indicated.

If you are experiencing EDS you may observe these:

  • frequently tired
  • work less productively
  • make mistakes
  • have lapses in judgment
  • Wakefulness
  • unable to enjoy or fully participate in life's activities
  • don't just "push through.

Poor sleep caused by EDS can have drastic, long-term effects on your health like reduced sleep are tied to cardiovascular problems and weight gain, as well as your mental health. Not only that, when you go about your day overtired, but you also put yourself and others at risk, since motor vehicle accidents and other dangerous errors are often caused by sleepiness. If you're feeling the symptom of excessive sleepiness, talk to your doctor so the two of you can take a closer look at your sleep habits and take steps to improve your health, and ultimately get you on the road to sleeping and feeling better.
